The Fairchilds have always been less about who stands in the spotlight and more about the world built around the music.
Created by French singer-songwriter, musician and producer Cyril Niccolai, The Fairchilds is somewhere between a band, a collective and a constantly evolving creative project.
Before The Fairchilds, Cyril spent years performing around the world in major musical productions including Notre Dame de Paris, Roméo et Juliette, Gone with the Wind and Jesus Christ Superstar. Those experiences shaped his relationship with the spotlight and his desire to create something larger than himself.
With The Fairchilds, Cyril remains the creative backbone — writing the songs and shaping the musical and visual identity — while musicians and collaborators change as each new chapter requires.
Cyril remains at the helm, setting the course while leaving room for different musicians and collaborators to come aboard. The Fairchilds has always been bigger than one person.
The Fairchilds released their debut album, Our Revolution, in 2011. The record established the foundations of their sound: melodic rock, big choruses, intimate moments and an underlying sense of optimism.
The album also marked the beginning of a long creative relationship with British producer and mixer Jim Lowe, whose work with Stereophonics had already played an important part in Cyril’s musical identity. What began as a collaboration became a friendship and a creative partnership that continues more than fifteen years later.
The album was produced and mixed with some of the people who had helped shape records Cyril admired, and featured guest appearances including Orianthi on High. Misery Loves Company was later featured in the promotion of NBC’s Dracula.
Our Revolution was the beginning of an idea that would remain central to The Fairchilds: make the music you believe in, surround yourself with people who make it better, and keep moving forward.
The second album, Let It Out, arrived in 2020 — just as the world shut down.
Touring plans disappeared almost overnight, making it impossible to give the album the live life that had originally been imagined for it. Yet, in an unexpected way, many of its songs found an even stronger resonance with listeners during that strange and isolated period.
Sun in the Storm, in particular, became one of those songs. Its message of finding light in difficult circumstances connected deeply with listeners, leading Cyril to later record a stripped-down acoustic version built around voice and cello.
Other songs from the record found their own lives beyond the album. She Drives Me Crazy and Hey God were used in television series, while the record developed a particularly strong connection with fans in Asia, including China and Korea.
As travel gradually returned, Cyril continued performing throughout Asia, and songs from Let It Out began finding their way onto stages thousands of miles from where they had been created.
Visually, the album was also deeply personal. Inspired by Cyril’s fascination with street art — from Banksy and Mr. Brainwash to Basquiat — Let It Out became a handmade project as much as a musical one. Cyril created its artwork himself, reinforcing an approach that would become increasingly important to The Fairchilds: an album should be a world, not simply a collection of songs.
Studio City is quite literally made in the San Fernando Valley, in Studio City.
After years of living in Los Angeles, Cyril realized that the name of the neighborhood he called home had been sitting in front of him all along. Studio City sounded like an album title. It could just as easily have been the title of a movie.
What began as an idea for a largely acoustic, folk-inspired record gradually became something far more eclectic.
Rather than limiting the songs to a predetermined style, Cyril decided to embrace the freedom that comes with being an independent artist: no label, no A&R department, no one defining what a Fairchilds record was supposed to sound like.
The result became an album about freedom — musical freedom, creative freedom and the freedom to tell stories.
If the first album was about instinct and the second about discovering an identity, Studio City feels like the moment when that identity no longer needs to be questioned. Eight songs, eight individual stories, but one shared world.
There is Swim, written at the piano, about trying to stay afloat in a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming. Its message is deliberately simple: keep swimming a little longer. There is always a way to shore.
Restless turns that same instinct into movement — the desire to keep going, keep searching and keep staring at the sun.
Top of the World strips everything back to something almost deliberately naïve: two people together, happy enough to believe they can take on anything.
The American Dream looks at another side of modern life, using its title sarcastically to question division, superficiality and the gradual erosion of the idea that anything is possible.
My Valentine explores the opposite end of the emotional spectrum: the confusion and regret of a relationship ending, wrapped in a melody and arrangement deliberately inspired by the timeless simplicity of The Beatles.
And Let the Candle Burn looks at time itself — at looking back without staying there, and at one generation encouraging the next to make things, explore, fail, try again and keep moving.
THE MAKING OF STUDIO CITY
Cyril wrote all eight songs and recorded much of the instrumentation himself, including guitars and piano.
For Studio City, he invited his longtime friend Mathieu Lecat to co-produce the album with him. Their different musical instincts became part of the record’s strength: Cyril concentrating on songwriting, performance and arrangements while Mathieu brought his own sensibility to production, sound design and orchestration.
THE FINAL TOUCH
Jim Lowe returned once again to mix the record, continuing the creative relationship that began with Our Revolution, while mastering was handled by Brian Lucey, whose work has been part of the sound of The Fairchilds since Let It Out.
NO BORDERS
The album also reflects the way music can now be made without geographical borders. Its foundations were recorded in Los Angeles, while musicians contributed from Brazil, Italy, the United States and other parts of the world.
Tracks travelled across continents; musicians recorded remotely, exchanged ideas by video, and sent performances back to Los Angeles to become part of the finished songs.
MADE TO BE AN ALBUM
In that sense, Studio City mirrors Cyril’s own life: rooted in one place, but constantly shaped by travel, encounters and people from around the world.
Visually, the album looks backwards in order to move forwards. Inspired by California in the late ’60s and early ’70s, its artwork is designed as a small time capsule — something that might have been discovered in a record store in 1972.
That made Studio City the natural album for another Fairchilds first: vinyl.
In an era dominated by individual songs, Cyril deliberately wanted to make something that could still be experienced as an album — artwork, sequencing, lyrics, sound and atmosphere all belonging to the same story.
The years between Let It Out and Studio City also took Cyril around the world.
He continued touring extensively with Roméo et Juliette, particularly throughout China, with tours lasting several months at a time. He also performed with symphony orchestras in Asia, including Taipei and China, alongside acoustic performances across Asia and occasional shows in Los Angeles.
In 2024, Cyril also wrote “One Heart”, a song created in connection with the Paris Olympic Games, adding another chapter to his work as a songwriter and composer beyond The Fairchilds.
But increasingly, performing has become only one part of his creative life.
CREATING THE NEXT CHAPTER
Today Cyril writes and produces for other artists, creates musical arrangements and works as a musical director for stage productions. In 2025, he created Love Duets Are Eternal, an original show built around two lead singers.
That experience reinforced his growing interest in creating shows from the ground up — bringing together music, arrangements, staging, lighting and storytelling as parts of one creative vision. He is now developing new stage projects, including his first original musical.
He has also written an educational music book for children and continues developing projects that allow him to move between songwriting, production, musical direction and the stage.
The next ambition follows naturally from all of that: to create his own original musical and carry it from the first spark of an idea all the way to the stage — and ultimately, to an audience.
And somewhere on the list remains another dream: writing a film score.
For Cyril, a song is ultimately a three-minute journey.
And once it is released, it doesn’t entirely belong to the person who wrote it anymore.
A song can become part of someone’s run in the morning, a long drive home, a summer, a breakup — or simply make someone feel a little less alone on a difficult day.
Those messages from listeners saying that a song helped them through a particular moment remain the greatest reward.
In a world filled with noise, bad news and reasons to divide ourselves, Studio City offers eight small places to escape to.
For a few minutes, perhaps that is enough.
Keep on staring at the sun.
